10 Tips to keep your Fibreglass pool crystal clear!

Maintaining your pool

Regular cleaning of your fibreglass pool not only keeps the water clear and visually appealing but also helps prevent algae growth, staining, and damage to the pool’s surface and equipment, ultimately extending the lifespan of both the pool and its components. Here are some tips to maintain a sparkling pool:

1. Skim the Surface Regularly
  • Use a pool skimmer or pool net to remove leaves, bugs, and debris that may collect on the surface. Doing this daily or every couple of days will prevent the debris from sinking and causing stains.

2. Brush the Pool Walls and Floor
  • Even though fibreglass surfaces are smooth, algae can still grow. Use a soft-bristle pool brush or a microfibre cloth to clean the walls and floor weekly, especially around corners, steps, and ladders where buildup is common.

3. Vacuum the Pool
  • A manual or automatic pool vacuum helps remove dirt and debris that settles at the bottom. Vacuum your pool at least once a week to maintain clarity and hygiene.

4. Monitor and Balance Water Chemistry
  • pH Levels: Keep the pH between 7.2 and 7.6. This prevents scale buildup and corrosion.

  • Alkalinity: Maintain the alkalinity at 80-120 ppm for water stability.

  • Chlorine Levels: Keep chlorine levels between 1-3 ppm to kill bacteria and algae.

  • Calcium Hardness: Keep levels between 200-400 ppm to prevent scaling.

5. Shock the Pool Regularly
  • Shocking the pool once every 1-2 weeks helps eliminate organic contaminants, such as sweat, sunscreen, and body oils. This also prevents algae growth and keeps the water fresh.

6. Use a Pool Cover
  • A pool cover will reduce debris buildup, minimize water evaporation, and protect the water from UV rays that can break down chemicals faster. It's especially useful when your pool is not in use for long periods.

7. Check the Filter and Pump System
  • Regularly clean or backwash the pool filter to ensure efficient filtration. A clean filter helps remove dirt and contaminants, keeping the water clean and clear.

8. Monitor Calcium and Metals
  • Fibreglass pools are less prone to staining, but metals (like iron and copper) or high calcium levels can cause slight stains or scaling. Test for these and use an isolating agent or water softener if necessary.

9. Keep an Eye on the Water Level
  • The water should always be at the recommended level, usually about halfway up the skimmer. Low water levels can damage the pump, while high levels affect filtration efficiency.

10. Invest in a Robotic Pool Cleaner
  • For more hands-off maintenance, a robotic pool cleaner can save time by automatically scrubbing the pool’s walls, floor, and steps while filtering out debris.
